How Roost Began

A question with no one to ask.

It started with a hen who wouldn't eat and a forum thread from 2009 that never got answered. Our founder, Maya, had just brought home her first six pullets — Barred Rocks and a single, stubborn Silkie — and when one stopped eating on day three, she realized something quietly devastating: she had no one to ask. Not a neighbor, not a vet who took chickens seriously, not a community that understood why a single hen’s appetite could feel like an emergency. Roost grew from that loneliness — a place where no question is too small, no breed too obscure, and no first-time keeper is left without an answer.

Build-Along Forum

Your first coop, built with 4,000 hands.

The moment you post your shed dimensions and ask 'where do I even start?' — you'll have twelve replies before dinner. Members share framing photos, ventilation calculations, predator-proofing checklists, and the honest mistakes they made so you don't have to. The build-along forum turns a solo weekend project into a neighborhood barn-raising.

Photo Breed Library

Every breed. Every colour. Every question.

Post a single photo of a bird you can't identify and within hours you'll know her breed, likely hatch year, and whether that comb shape means anything to worry about. The photo library has grown to 340+ documented breeds, cross-referenced by temperament, egg colour, and cold-hardiness. It's the field guide that didn't exist — built entirely by members who've raised them.

Weekly Expert Sessions

Live answers from people who've seen it before.

Every Thursday at 7pm, a vet, a heritage breeder, or a seasoned keeper joins a live Q&A. No topic is too niche — last week's session covered moulting timelines, the next covers integrating new pullets without a pecking-order war. Sessions are recorded and searchable. The answer to your exact question is probably already waiting.

The First Egg Thread

The most-replied thread in Roost history. Every keeper's first egg story, stretching back six years.

Coop & Garden Integration

Half the community runs chickens alongside their vegetable gardens. The 'garden + flock' thread is where permaculture meets poultry.
